Parallels Desktop 27 is the latest major version of one of the most established ways to run Windows on a Mac. But this release is about considerably more than keeping Windows 11 compatible with the latest Macs and macOS.
The new Parallels software brings a new graphics architecture, better performance for demanding professional applications, faster AI and machine-learning workloads on newer Apple silicon, updated Linux support, and additional management and security capabilities for businesses.
Those changes also make choosing the right edition more important.
Parallels Desktop 27 is available in four main editions: Standard, Pro, Business, and Enterprise. They share the same basic idea of bringing Windows and other operating systems to the Mac, but they are designed for very different users.
Standard is primarily for people who simply need Windows applications on their Mac. Pro goes much further for developers, engineers, creators, and power users. Business adds the administration and deployment features organizations need, while Enterprise gives IT departments considerably more control over virtual machines across managed Mac fleets.
So, what has actually changed in Parallels Desktop 27, and which edition should you choose?
Let’s look at the new version from a practical perspective.
What Is Parallels Desktop 27?
Parallels Desktop is virtualization software that lets you run another operating system inside macOS.
For most people, that means running Windows 11 on a Mac without rebooting.
Instead of keeping a separate Windows laptop or restarting the Mac to change operating systems, Windows runs in a virtual machine, or VM, alongside macOS.
That makes some surprisingly useful workflows possible.
You could have Safari and Finder open in macOS while simultaneously running Excel and Access for Windows. Parallels Desktop 27 Is Now Built Exclusively for Apple Silicon
Before discussing performance, there’s one important compatibility change.
Parallels Desktop 27 does not support Intel Macs.
The new version is designed exclusively for Apple silicon and supports Macs based on Apple’s M-series processors. Intel Mac owners can continue using Parallels Desktop 26, which Parallels says will continue receiving periodic security and compatibility updates.
This is an important distinction if you’re upgrading from an older Parallels Desktop release.

For anyone buying Parallels Desktop 27 for a recent MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, Mac Studio, or other Apple silicon Mac, the Intel change isn’t a concern. Owners of older Intel Macs, however, should not purchase version 27 expecting it to work.

One of the biggest technical changes in Parallels Desktop 27 is its graphics system.
Windows virtual machines now use a reengineered OpenGL driver powered by Apple’s Metal graphics technology, increasing OpenGL support from version 4.1 to OpenGL 4.3.
That specification by itself doesn’t tell you much about the experience, so the applications that can benefit are more interesting.
CAD, GIS, engineering, scientific visualization, and 3D applications frequently rely heavily on graphics acceleration. Parallels Desktop 27 is therefore aimed at making a Mac more practical as a workstation for Windows software in these categories.

Those are Parallels’ own benchmark results, and actual performance will depend on the Mac, application, virtual machine configuration, dataset, and project.
Still, this is an important development.
Consider an architect who prefers a MacBook Pro but occasionally needs a Windows-only application. Or a GIS specialist who spends part of the day in ArcGIS Pro. The question isn’t whether Windows can technically boot inside a VM. What matters is whether maps, models, assemblies, and other complex visual content remain responsive enough to work with comfortably.
That’s where the graphics improvements in Parallels Desktop 27 become much more meaningful than another annual compatibility update.
A Better Option for CAD, GIS, Engineering, and 3D Work
Parallels Desktop Pro already targets people who need to run demanding Windows software on a Mac, including applications such as AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, 3ds Max, SolidWorks, Rhinoceros, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcMap.
Version 27 strengthens that use case.
Imagine an engineer whose company uses Macs but receives a SolidWorks project from a customer. Maintaining a separate Windows workstation just for occasional Windows-specific projects may not be ideal. Parallels Desktop 27 allows Windows and Linux virtual machines to take advantage of Apple’s Scalable Matrix Extension (SME) CPU capabilities on M4 and M5 Macs.
These instructions can accelerate matrix-heavy computing workloads, which makes them particularly relevant to artificial intelligence and machine learning.
In Parallels’ testing with Ubuntu on an M4 Pro Mac, matrix operations ran as much as seven times faster, while neural-network inference improved by up to 1.75 times.
This doesn’t mean every AI application suddenly runs seven times faster. The improvement depends heavily on the model, software stack, and type of computation.
But it creates some interesting possibilities for developers.
For example, a developer could keep macOS as the primary environment while creating an Ubuntu VM for experimenting with tools such as Ollama or llama.cpp. That VM can become an isolated local AI laboratory without requiring another physical Linux computer.

Parallels Desktop 27 Standard: Best for Everyday Windows Use
Despite all the new professional features, plenty of people don’t need their Mac to become a development laboratory or engineering workstation.
They just need Windows.
That’s exactly where Parallels Desktop 27 Standard Edition fits.
Standard supports up to 8 GB of virtual RAM and 4 virtual CPUs per VM, which is intended for everyday Windows applications rather than extremely demanding professional workloads.
Think about a Mac owner who occasionally receives an Access database from work. A student might need Windows-only software required for a course. An accountant could depend on specialized financial software that isn’t available for macOS. A small business may still use an older Windows program containing years of important company information.
Microsoft Office is another obvious example.

These changes won’t matter much to someone who only runs Excel for Windows.

One solution would be maintaining a separate fleet of Windows PCs.
Another is letting employees create whatever virtual machines they want.
Neither is especially attractive to IT.
Business Edition allows the company to provide Windows environments while gaining centralized license management and deployment capabilities.

What Mac Do You Need for Parallels Desktop 27?
Because Parallels Desktop 27 is Apple-silicon-only, an M-series Mac is the starting requirement.
But there’s a major difference between being able to run Parallels and having the ideal Mac for a particular workload.
Someone running Microsoft Access and Excel in Windows has very different requirements from a developer simultaneously running Windows 11 and two Linux VMs.
For basic Windows applications, a mainstream Apple silicon Mac can be perfectly practical.

There’s another useful rule: don’t assume assigning every available processor and as much memory as possible to Windows will make it faster.
Your Mac still needs to run macOS and everything else happening outside the VM. A balanced configuration is usually more useful than starving the host operating system to maximize the VM.
Should Parallels Desktop 26 Users Upgrade to Version 27?
The answer depends heavily on how you use Parallels.

For the right user, Parallels Desktop 27 can turn one Mac into a much more flexible computer.
Standard Edition remains the straightforward choice for home users, students, and professionals who primarily need access to Windows applications.
Pro is where Parallels Desktop 27 becomes a serious professional platform. Developers can build multi-OS environments, engineers and designers gain better support for graphics-intensive Windows applications, and power users have much more control over VM resources and automation.
Business takes those capabilities into a team environment by adding centralized licensing, deployment, and administration.
Enterprise goes another step further by giving IT departments the tools to standardize, secure, distribute, and control virtual machines across an organization.
The biggest mistake would be choosing an edition based solely on the feature count.
Start with the Windows software you actually need and how you’re going to use it.
If all you want is Excel, Access, or another Windows-only application on your Mac, Standard may be everything you need. If the virtual machine is becoming part of your professional workstation, development environment, or engineering workflow, Pro makes considerably more sense. If you’re responsible for other people’s Macs as well as your own, that’s when Business and Enterprise enter the picture.
Ultimately, that’s the strongest argument for Parallels Desktop 27. It isn’t simply about putting Windows 11 on a Mac.
